Overview

MGM Cotai opened on 13 February 2018, roughly eleven years after MGM’s first Macau property, MGM Macau, opened on the peninsula in 2007. That gap is instructive: MGM waited longer than most of its competitors to secure a Cotai footprint, and when it finally built one, it committed to a design brief — Kohn Pedersen Fox’s folded-box massing over a record-setting atrium — distinctive enough to make up ground against neighbours that had a decade’s head start establishing themselves on the Strip.

MGM’s Macau operations run as MGM China Holdings, majority-owned by MGM Resorts International with Pansy Ho, daughter of Stanley Ho, holding a substantial minority stake — a corporate structure common to several of Macau’s licensed operators, which pair a foreign hospitality brand with a locally connected partner rather than operating purely as a wholly foreign entity in the territory.

Architecture & Design

Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates conceived the massing as a stack of folded Chinese jewellery boxes, clad in reflective gold, silver and bronze glass across roughly 142,500 square metres of panelling. That cladding does double duty: it’s the building’s most immediately legible visual signature, and it’s engineered specifically for coastal typhoon loading, which is a structural requirement every Cotai building has to meet regardless of how decorative its skin looks from the ground. At the core sits the Spectacle, a column-free atrium of about 8,000 square metres carried on a diagrid steel roof — cited as the largest free-span grid-shell glass roof built to date, an engineering superlative rather than a marketing one, since a free span at that scale removes the option of intermediate structural support most large atriums rely on. The space holds a permanent digital installation across 28 LED walls showing curated footage of flora, fauna and landscape, turning what would otherwise be a purely structural showpiece into a functioning exhibition space as well. The Spectacle’s diagrid roof was engineered by Arup (Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd.) working alongside design architect Kohn Pedersen Fox, and it holds the Guinness World Record for the largest free-span grid-shell glazed roof — a record standing above two towers whose 1,390 keys split roughly into 1,248 rooms and suites across the Resort Towers and 142 luxury villas and suites in The Mansion at MGM. The folded-box exterior form also reduces the building’s total glazed surface area exposed to any single compass direction compared with a flat curtain-wall tower of equivalent volume, which has a modest but real effect on solar heat gain across the building’s cooling load.

Gaming Floors

MGM Cotai’s gaming floor covers approximately 24,549 square metres — smaller than several of its Cotai neighbours, consistent with the resort’s programme prioritising exhibition, MICE and fine dining over sheer gaming footprint. Reported table counts have moved over time: figures from the 2018 opening cited around 175 tables, largely baccarat-led, while more recent reporting from mid-2025 puts the count at roughly 410 tables and 972 slot machines, broadly in line with the property’s current deployment of approximately 390 to 400 tables and 1,100 to 1,200 slots and electronic gaming terminals. As at every Macau casino, entry to the gaming floor is restricted to guests aged 21 and above. Macau residents are not generally prohibited from gambling — Law No. 10/2012, effective since 27 December 2019, restricts access only for gaming-sector employees while off duty across all industry roles, with an exception during the first three days of the Lunar New Year, and for senior public office holders, managed through self-exclusion and third-party-exclusion schemes rather than a residency-wide ban.

Non-gaming

MGM Cotai’s programme deliberately shifted investment toward large-scale MICE facilities, fine dining and cultural exhibition rather than gaming floor area, on a total investment of roughly USD 3.4 billion. The Chairman’s Collection is the clearest statement of that priority: a permanent display of over 300 curated works mixing historical artefacts with modern commissions, including 28 imperial carpets dating from the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) displayed alongside contemporary sculpture by Asian and international artists. Housing museum-grade historical objects inside an operating casino resort is an unusual curatorial decision — it requires the same climate-control and security standards a dedicated museum would need, built into a building whose primary function is hospitality rather than conservation, and it signals MGM using cultural credibility as a differentiator against competitors leaning harder on gaming capacity or themed spectacle. The USD 3.4 billion investment figure also sits inside the same non-gaming policy shift shaping the rest of the market: Macau’s six concessionaires collectively committed roughly MOP 118.8 billion (about US$14.8 billion) to non-gaming projects under the ten-year gaming concessions signed in December 2022, at a ratio of roughly ten to one against pledged gaming investment — a mandate MGM Cotai’s MICE-and-exhibition-led programme was, in effect, already anticipating years before the concession renewal made it a formal regulatory requirement.

Hotel

The hotel holds 1,390 rooms, suites and skylofts across two towers, ranging from the 39-square-metre Resort Room up to a 300-square-metre private villa. The skylofts are laid out on a New York loft plan — exposed structural elements and open-plan living space rather than the more compartmentalised layout typical of Asian resort suites — giving MGM Cotai a room category with a genuinely different spatial identity from its neighbours’ suite offerings. That spread, from compact entry-level rooms to villa-scale top-tier accommodation, lets the property serve both value-driven and ultra-premium guests from the same two towers. Interior finishes across the standard room categories follow the gold-silver-bronze palette established on the exterior, carrying the jewellery-box concept through from the building’s massing into individual guest rooms rather than treating the theme as an exterior-only gesture.

Location

Transit runs through the Macau Light Rapid Transit’s Taipa line, reached from the property via a climate-controlled pedestrian link to Cotai East station. Complimentary shuttle buses run daily to the Border Gate, Macau International Airport and the Taipa Ferry Terminal, covering the main entry points visitors use into Macau. Dining spans international chef-led concepts and regional Cantonese kitchens sourcing from the Greater Bay Area’s agricultural belt — a supply chain that ties MGM Cotai’s kitchens directly into the cross-border produce networks running between Guangdong province and Macau, rather than relying on imported product for its regional menus. City of Dreams and the Londoner Macao both sit within a similar transit radius, making MGM Cotai a workable base for guests planning to sample dining and gaming across several Cotai properties over a multi-night stay.

Tips

Visit the Spectacle even without booking a room — the atrium and its LED installation function as a genuine public attraction, and the engineering achievement of the free-span roof is worth seeing in person regardless of gaming or dining plans. The Chairman’s Collection is easy to walk past without noticing on the way to the casino floor; travellers with any interest in Qing-dynasty decorative arts or contemporary Asian sculpture should build in deliberate time to see it rather than treating it as background decor. For room selection, the skylofts suit travellers who specifically want a loft-style layout over a conventional hotel floor plan — a meaningfully different stay from the standard Resort Room tier, and worth the upgrade only if that spatial format is actually a priority. Cantonese diners specifically should ask which outlets are sourcing Greater Bay Area produce that week, since the regional kitchens rotate seasonal ingredients through their menus rather than running a fixed year-round card. First-time visitors touring the Chairman’s Collection should ask at the concierge whether a guided walkthrough is offered that day — the collection spans several eras and disciplines, and a brief guided context does more for the pieces than a self-directed pass on the way to dinner.
