History & Context
Broadway Food Street opened in May 2015 as the anchor dining component of Broadway Macau, a property Galaxy Entertainment Group built on a site that had previously sat unfinished for years as the stalled “Grand Waldo” project before Galaxy acquired it in 2013. The street was pitched from the outset as Macau’s first purpose-built hawker-style food market — a deliberate counter-programme to the enclosed, air-conditioned casino-podium dining that otherwise defines Cotai, gathering more than 40 independent food vendors, several with roots in Macau’s older peninsula neighbourhoods, under one open-air roof.
Architecture & Design
The street runs open-air rather than climate-controlled, using exposed steel structural framing and red-brick facade treatment that references early-20th-century market-stall design rather than the themed resort architecture surrounding it on Cotai. Natural cross-ventilation through the open sides reduces reliance on mechanical cooling — an unusual choice on a strip otherwise built almost entirely around sealed, air-conditioned interiors. The roughly 300-metre run organises stalls along a linear grid and connects directly into the Galaxy Macau resort podium via a covered, air-conditioned footbridge, letting visitors move between the open street and the enclosed casino floor without stepping back outside.
Local Taste
The stall mix leans toward Cantonese and Macanese street food executed with sit-down-restaurant consistency: charcoal-grilled skewers, hand-pulled noodles, roast meats, and Macanese snacks like pork chop bun sit alongside dessert and drink counters, with combined seating for over 1,000 guests spread across communal tables rather than individual restaurant seating. The format is closer to a curated hawker centre than a food court, prioritising vendors whose preparation methods — hand-pulling, charcoal grilling — would otherwise be labour-intensive to run inside a standard mall unit.
Economic Context
Broadway Food Street functions as Galaxy Entertainment Group’s answer to the non-gaming diversification pressure facing every Cotai operator: a lower price-point, higher-turnover dining format that captures visitors who might otherwise eat off-property, while giving smaller and legacy food operators a footprint inside an integrated-resort ecosystem they could not otherwise afford to occupy directly.
Lore
The precinct plays on the nostalgia of Macau’s pre-casino street-food scene deliberately: several stalls trace their origins to family businesses that once operated from the older peninsula districts before rents and redevelopment pushed small vendors out, and Broadway Food Street’s pitch has always leaned on that continuity — a controlled, resort-adjacent recreation of a dining culture that has become harder to find in its original, unplanned form elsewhere in the city.
Practical Information
The street sits on Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus, reached via the free shuttle bus network running out of the Galaxy Macau transport hub or via the Lotus Checkpoint side of the Cotai transit grid. Stalls generally operate from around 11:00 to 22:00 daily, with individual vendor hours varying. Parking is available in the adjacent Broadway Hotel structure, with direct basement-level access to the dining strip. Visitors combining Broadway Food Street with a night at Galaxy Macau can reach the strip on foot via the covered footbridge without needing the shuttle at all.
