Architecture & Design
ZipCity Macau runs five parallel steel lines across 388 metres between two purpose-built towers inside the Lisboeta Macau complex on Cotai, launching from a 60-metre tower that puts riders above the rooftops of the surrounding resort podiums with a clear line toward the Cotai Strip skyline. Riders reach speeds of up to 55 kilometres an hour along the run, which is billed — with some justification — as the world’s third-longest urban zipline and the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region. A magnetic braking system handles deceleration into the landing platform without the mechanical wear of a friction-brake system, letting the ride run at higher turnover through a full day of departures.
History & Context
ZipCity opened on July 17, 2021, part of the first development phase of Lisboeta Macau, and markets itself as the world’s first audio-visual zipline attraction — riders wear headsets synced to the flight, layering a soundtrack and narration over the aerial view rather than leaving the ride silent. Lisboeta itself is built around a curated, nostalgic reconstruction of mid-20th-century Macau streetscapes, including a life-sized recreation of the old Hotel Estoril facade, the long-scrapped floating casino Macau Palace, and interior motifs drawn from the historic Central Hotel — a theming choice that places a distinctly modern adventure ride inside a resort built to evoke Macau’s pre-integrated-resort urban past. The roughly 141,000-square-metre Lisboeta complex is a project of Macau Theme Park and Resort Ltd, tied to SJM Holdings and the Ho family gaming dynasty, and sits directly beside SJM’s much larger Grand Lisboa Palace on Cotai; where that neighbouring resort courts premium gaming visitors, Lisboeta’s zipline, indoor-skydiving, and night-market attractions are built for the mass-market, family-day-trip end of Cotai’s tourism economy.
Practical Information
Night sessions run under some 100,000 LED lights woven through the line and harness rigging, turning the ride into a visible feature of the Cotai skyline after dark rather than a daytime-only attraction. The Macau LRT’s Cotai East station sits roughly 500 metres away, on the Cotai Strip’s main transit corridor. Taipa Village, with its preserved Portuguese-Chinese shophouse streets and stalls selling almond cookies and pork chop buns, is an easy walk from the complex and pairs naturally with a ZipCity visit. Riders are required to store loose items in lockers before boarding, a standard precaution for an elevated ride running directly above pedestrian areas and resort infrastructure. Current operating hours run Thursday through Monday, 14:00 to 22:00, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with a minimum rider age of 7 and a weight range of 30 to 100 kilograms in place of a height requirement.
ZipCity opened alongside Lisboeta’s other headline non-gaming draws — an indoor skydiving chamber and a night market built into the same phase-one development — reflecting the same government-driven push toward family and adventure-tourism amenities that shaped Studio City’s water park and other Cotai additions of the same period. For SJM, an operator whose brand still runs mostly on Stanley Ho-era legacy properties, Lisboeta’s cluster of adrenaline attractions functions as a way to draw a younger, non-gambling demographic onto Cotai without competing head-on with Sands or Galaxy’s larger integrated resorts on gaming floor space alone.
