Architecture & Design
teamLab SuperNature occupies a converted section of the Cotai Expo inside The Venetian Macao, engineered as a single continuous dark volume of 5,000 square metres rather than a sequence of discrete rooms. Visitors move through more than twenty interconnected installations with no fixed route, a deliberately non-linear plan that lets the crowd disperse rather than queue past exhibits in order — a design choice teamLab uses across its permanent venues, distinct from a conventional gallery circulation. Ceiling-mounted sensor arrays and high-density projection mapping track visitor position and movement in real time, so several of the installations — flowers that bloom and wilt as people pass, a waterfall built from moving points of light — respond directly to whoever is standing beneath them rather than running on a fixed loop. The Cotai Expo shell itself was built with the load capacity and clear-span ceiling height needed for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) use, which is what made it adaptable to a permanent art installation of this scale in the first place.
History & Context
The exhibition opened in June 2020, a collaboration between the Tokyo-based art collective teamLab and Sands China, The Venetian’s operator, and remains open on a permanent basis rather than as a touring show. Named installations include Valley of Flowers and People, Floating Flower Garden, Animals of Flowers — Symbiotic Lives, Athletics Forest, a waterfall composed of falling light rendered as water droplets, and the EN TEA HOUSE, where tea poured into a bowl triggers its own flower projection. The through-line across the installations is teamLab’s “body-immersive” premise: exhibits meant to be entered and altered by the visitor’s body, rather than viewed at a fixed distance, extending a body of work the collective has built across permanent sites in Tokyo, Shanghai, and elsewhere.
Practical Information
Entry is through The Venetian Macao’s west wing, open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm with last entry around 8:15pm. The Cotai Strip bus network and the Macau LRT’s Cotai West Station, linked to the resort by a covered pedestrian skywalk, both serve the property, and Sands operates shuttle routes from the Taipa Ferry Terminal and Macau International Airport into the same arrival halls. Because the projection surfaces and sensor equipment are sensitive to humidity, the hall runs under tighter climate control than the casino floor around it, and the operator caps visitor numbers inside at any one time to keep the technology — and the experience — working as intended. Standard adult admission runs around MOP/HKD 288 at the door or through the official Cotai Ticketing channel, with an early-entry discount for guests arriving before noon and a lower child rate of MOP 208 for ages three to twelve; children under three enter free, and add-on tickets for special installations such as the Floating Flower Garden run MOP 100. As with most Cotai attraction pricing, promotional rates appear periodically, so the posted walk-up price is worth checking against the operator’s own site before a visit.
