Architecture & Design
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows stands as a minimalist concrete structure located on the northern slope of Coloane Hill. Constructed in 1966, the chapel exhibits a distinct mid-century modernist aesthetic, deviating from the typical Baroque ornamentation found in older Macanese churches. The design centers on a triangular, geometric form, featuring a prominent, unadorned cross that serves as the focal point of the façade. The structure utilizes reinforced concrete, emphasizing clean lines and functionalist simplicity, which reflects the post-war architectural transition within the territory. The interior is characterized by an austere layout designed to maximize natural light through specifically oriented apertures, creating a stark contrast with the dense surrounding vegetation.
History & Context
Commissioned by the Diocese of Macau, the chapel was established to serve the leper colony that occupied the surrounding area of Ka Ho until the late 1960s. Its primary function was to provide a site of worship for the residents of the settlement, known as the Ka Ho Leper Village. The site holds historical significance as a physical testament to the efforts of the Catholic Church in managing social welfare and healthcare in Macau during the mid-20th century. Following the eradication of leprosy in the territory, the village was repurposed, yet the chapel remains a protected site, preserving the social history of the Ka Ho settlement.
Practical Information
The chapel is accessible via public transit, served by the 15 and 21A bus lines, which terminate at the nearby Ka Ho Village stop. Given its peripheral location on the eastern side of Coloane, the site experiences lower pedestrian traffic compared to central peninsula heritage locations. Visitors are encouraged to observe the neighboring former leper village buildings, which remain under conservation protocols to maintain their colonial-era architectural integrity. The site maintains a quiet environment; visitors should respect the site’s ongoing religious function and local conservation status.
