Geography & Setting

Cheoc Van — Portuguese for “Bamboo Bay” — is a small granite-framed cove of roughly 5,000 square metres at the southern end of Coloane island, a stretch of coast that stayed largely rural and low-density even as the Macau Peninsula and, later, Cotai were reshaped by reclamation. The bay’s granite headlands enclose the beach on both sides, and the site historically supported small-scale fishing and aquaculture before the 20th-century paving of Coloane’s coastal road connected the island’s south to the wider municipal transit grid.

Architecture & Design

The beach is anchored by two mid-20th-century structures rather than the resort-scale architecture found on Cotai. The Cheoc Van public swimming pool, a reinforced-concrete complex above the sand, reflects the plain, functional civil-engineering standards of the late colonial period — public infrastructure built for utility rather than display. The adjacent Pousada de Coloane began life as a private manor house in the 1930s before its conversion into a beach hotel that opened to guests in 1977; the property today runs 28 rooms, a Portuguese restaurant, and an outdoor pool, its heavy masonry, terracotta roofing, and dark timber trim sitting in deliberate contrast to the open granite coastline around it. Both buildings keep to a low profile against the hillside, leaving the bay’s natural curve as the dominant visual feature rather than competing with it.

Local Taste

The Pousada de Coloane’s restaurant serves home-style Portuguese cooking — bacalhau preparations, grilled meats, and a wine list — in a setting overlooking the bay, functioning as one of the few sit-down dining options directly on this stretch of Coloane’s south coast rather than in the village centre a short drive away.

ESG & Conservation

Macau’s Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) runs regular water-quality monitoring at Cheoc Van as part of the territory’s public swimming-safety programme, a standard precaution for a semi-enclosed bay on a coastline that sits close to the Pearl River Delta’s freshwater and shipping traffic.

Economic Context

Cheoc Van’s economy runs almost entirely on the Pousada de Coloane and its restaurant rather than on beachfront vendor stalls or resort development, keeping the cove’s commercial footprint small relative to Hac Sa Beach further along the same coast. That scale reflects Coloane’s broader position in Macau’s tourism economy: an intentionally lower-density counterweight to the casino density of the peninsula and Cotai, sustained more by weekend day-trippers and hotel guests than by large-scale hospitality investment.

Practical Information

Cheoc Van Beach is served by bus routes 15, 21A, 26A, and 26, with the nearest stop roughly 150 metres from the shoreline. Visitors arriving from Cotai typically transit via Avenida de Coloane. Facilities include public changing rooms, shower units, and a lifeguard station during daylight hours. The public pool above the beach operates on a separate schedule from the open sea swimming area, and is generally the preferred option for families given calmer, filtered water compared to the open bay. The Pousada de Coloane’s restaurant and terrace remain open to non-guests, making it possible to spend a full day at the beach and pool and then walk directly into dinner without leaving the site.
