History & Context
Water World Ocean Park opened on 21 September 2021 on a hillside site overlooking the South China Sea in Aberdeen, on the grounds of the wider Ocean Park. It replaces an earlier outdoor water park that operated on the same stretch of coastline from 1984 to 1999; the new complex, at roughly 693,000 square feet, is nearly twice the size of its predecessor. Built into the steep terrain of Hong Kong Island’s southern coast, the park is organized into five zones — Splendid Reef, Torrential River, Thrill Valley, Adventure Coast, and Hidden Village — spanning 27 indoor and outdoor attractions, including Hong Kong’s first surf-rider machine and, inside the Hidden Village zone, the territory’s first indoor wave pool.
Architecture & Design
The park’s defining structural feature is a tiered roof system of steel trusses and insulated fabric membrane, engineered to follow the hillside’s natural contours rather than flatten the site for construction. This lets the layout combine indoor and outdoor sections without a hard boundary between them, and the design retained existing vegetation on the slope wherever the build allowed. The indoor sections use daylight-harvesting and high-efficiency ventilation systems to manage energy use across a facility large enough that Hong Kong’s humidity would otherwise make climate control a significant running cost. The completed park markets itself as Asia’s first all-weather, year-round water park — the covered zones allow operation through Hong Kong’s cooler winter months and rainy season, a genuine departure from the seasonal outdoor water park that occupied the site until 1999.
Economic Context
Water World’s opening came at a difficult financial moment for its parent, Ocean Park Corporation, which recorded a swing from a HK$127 million surplus in 2013 to a HK$557 million deficit by 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic pushed attendance toward zero and brought the operator close to insolvency. The Hong Kong government subsequently provided more than HK$2 billion in financial assistance across 2021 to 2024 to keep the park operating, on top of an earlier HK$5.4 billion relief package the legislature approved after prolonged debate. Water World, built and opened during this period of financial strain, represents one part of the corporation’s strategy to diversify revenue beyond the aging main park’s wildlife and thrill-ride attractions.
Practical Information
Visitors reach the site via the MTR South Island Line to Ocean Park Station, followed by a complimentary shuttle bus to the Water World entrance; the wider Ocean Park complex is also linked by its own cable car and escalator system, though Water World sits on a separate hillside footprint. The park runs timed-entry ticketing to manage crowd density inside the covered zones. Food kiosks near the slide clusters serve Hong Kong-style egg waffles and milk tea alongside more generic theme-park fare, and single-use plastics are barred across all food and beverage outlets on site. In 2021, Water World also became the first waterpark in Asia to earn Certified Autism Center status, a designation reflecting staff training and sensory-accommodation measures for neurodivergent visitors — a notable accessibility commitment for a facility built around loud, high-stimulus attractions.
