Coastal Heritage & Architecture
Established in 1975 by the Hong Kong Life Saving Society, this Taoist shrine sits at the eastern end of Repulse Bay Beach. The complex features traditional Chinese temple architecture constructed with reinforced concrete and embellished with ceramic mosaic tiles. Two imposing statues of the deities Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea) and Kwun Yum (Goddess of Mercy) stand over 10 meters tall, facing the South China Sea to offer protection to mariners. Visitors walk across the Longevity Bridge, a small ornamental structure spanning a coastal pool; local tradition dictates that each crossing adds three days to a person’s lifespan. The courtyard also houses a variety of smaller porcelain deities, including the God of Wealth and a giant goldfish sculpture symbolizing prosperity.
Transit Connections & Island Escapes
To reach this coastal site from the dense urban core of Victoria Harbour, utilize the efficient MTR system. Take the South Island Line to Ocean Park Station, then transfer to Citybus Route 73, 260, or 973. Alternatively, board Citybus Route 6 or 6X directly from the Exchange Square bus terminus in Central. This transit route transitions from northern Hong Kong Island’s street-food hubs—where commuters grab hot egg tarts and curry fish balls—to the relaxed, marine environment of the southern coast.
